As some of you may have noticed, we’ve got a new look. Our dear friend Laura Oster came up with this wonderful logo and we couldn’t be more thrilled. It incorporates so many themes that are personal to us, starting with a massive walnut tree. (As a bit of babely trivia, we’ll have you know that Lenore was born on Walnut Street! Also, you have probably had our Salty Honey Walnut pie, which is made with nuts from our best friend’s ranch.) We were inspired by the work of hometown hero Kara Walker, whose life-sized cutout silhouettes explore themes of identity, race, and one’s own complicity in the progression of history. If you look closely, you can see that the two images on the ground utilize our own silhouettes. The logo is also a reference to The Sound and the Fury – one of Lenore’s favorite books, in which the mysterious and lovely Caddy Compson scales a pear tree to see into her grandmother’s funeral, leaving her brothers to stare up at her muddy pants. In a more literal sense, the logo captures one of our favorite past-times – climbing up trees to pick fruit, read a book, or just sit. We hope you all love it as much as we do!
